Women & Society

To be female is the alternate to being male and masculine.  One is placed into this male category first and then must prove manhood and masculinity.  For women it is about being passive.  Women live in a culture obsessed with them being sweet sexual creatures to please men.  The media enhances this effect.  Britney SpearsBritney Spears is the perfect example a sexual object in her song "Slave," which women bow to their men in a sense.  Also, Madonna with "Like a Virgin" is another example of a woman who uses her body to make money and has helped to create a phenomenon of women in main stream society expressing sexuality to create zealous followers.  We are beginning to see more of this occur all over the world as well.  Shakira is a new artist from Mexico who has started to make it big in the US.  In her song you may even be able to hear the "My breasts are small and humble, so you don't confuse them with mountains" line.  You can see how explicitly they use their sexuality.  These women act subordinate to male dominate culture but skate across "professionalism" due to their looks.

Women are taught not to be violent or they will be considered "bitches."  The few examples of women acting strong as in "Thelma and Louise" and the Bobbit case are both looked down upon in society yet are often headliners for movies and news broadcasts.  Women are in contrast supposed to be weak and passive.  This allows males to project violence upon them where they will think they may have done something wrong.  Also, they infer its that a man is just acting out and that he still loves her and therefore it doesn't count/matter.

Women are taught to be small as shown by such hit series as Ally McBeal.  From birth, they have been wrapped in pink and told to be pretty, and behave in a society that does not value them for the person they could be.
